We are bombarded with beauty tips every day. From magazines, to commercials, to social media, we are hit from every direction with the latest fads and fashions. “This will keep you young.” “That will keep you healthy.” “Follow these steps and you’ll never see a wrinkle or gray hair.” How do we know what to believe? Which tips are true nuggets of knowledge and which are anti-aging skin care myths?

To help you sift through the onslaught of information, A Complete decided to dig into some of the most common anti-aging skin care myths. We’ve debunked the myths and divulged the truth to provide solid information you can use to plan your skin care routine. You may be surprised at the truths we found:

Myth: You can judge a product by its cost.

Truth: This anti-aging skin care myth is based on the philosophy of “you get what you pay for.” This may be true in some instances, but it can lead consumers off track when shopping for beauty products. Just because it costs more, doesn’t mean it’s more effective.

Rather than read the price tag to choose your product, read the ingredients. Your skin benefits from natural supplements that provide the nutrients it needs to remain strong and supple. Look for essential vitamins, amino acids, hydrolyzed proteins and natural extracts. Ingredients based on a Mediterranean diet* are ideal. A combination of these powerhouses is what keeps your skin youthful, not the cost of the product.

Myth: No pain, no gain.

Truth: Taking great care of your skin does not have to be painful. Many people think they must use harsh creams that burn their skin and spend hours each day working on a skin care routine that consumes their life.

The truth behind this anti-aging skin care myth is that good skin care can be simple and pain-free. If your products are based on natural, anti-aging ingredients, they will soothe your skin, not burn it. As for the time factor – a healthy skin care regimen does require some time and effort, but it doesn’t have to take over your day. A quick morning routine with easy-to-use products can keep your skin looking and feeling great.

Myth: The more the merrier!

Truth: If a little product is good, a lot would be great, right? Nope. You don’t need to keep slathering on anti-aging creams to reap the benefits. In fact, high-quality products require only small amounts each time. Their potent ingredients work best if used as instructed. Don’t add layers and layers of various products in an attempt to multiply the effects. This can be harsh on your skin (and a waste of money!)

Myth: Youthful skin is achieved from the outside in.

Truth: This anti-aging skin care myth is even trickier, because it has a thread of truth. Yes, it’s helpful to apply the right external products to your skin. However, beautiful, healthy skin is ultimately achieved from the inside out. How? Your diet.

Eating the right foods isn’t only important during acne-prone adolescent years. It’s essential at any age. A diet filled with the vitamins and minerals your skin needs will help keep it hydrated and healthy. Since our daily eating habits often miss many of these essentials, we can supplement with a daily beauty concentrate that will pick up where our diet leaves off.

Myth: It’s too late – my skin already shows signs of aging.

Truth: It’s never too late to take good care of your skin. While we can’t turn back the clock, we can do our best with the present and future. Plus, our skin has great powers of recovery. With the right skin care routine, we can treat previous damage or wrinkles to lessen their effects. Going forward, a healthy skin care regimen can prevent or lessen the aging effects of life. Don’t let this anti-aging skin care myth stop you from improving your skin and looking your best.

Myth: Wrinkles are in my genes – I can’t control how I age.

Truth: Genetics are a huge factor in our appearance and our health. However, so are external factors. Genes play a role in aging that may be beyond your control, but you can direct the many other variables on the stage. Your diet, environment, UV exposure, and skin care regimen all effect how your skin ages. Making healthy lifestyle choices and using the right skin care products can slow down the aging process. Just because Grandma suffered from wrinkles and age spots early in life, that doesn’t mean you have to.

Myth: I wear SPF 50, so I’m well protected.

Truth: This anti-aging skin care myth is prevalent, due to the raised awareness of skin cancer risks. So, you probably know by now that sun exposure greatly effects skin health. You also know that wearing sun screen is important. But…you might not know that coating your skin with a high-level SPF isn’t enough. You need one with broad spectrum coverage to effectively protect your skin from aging.

Most sunscreens protect your skin from UVB rays. These are the primary “sunburn rays.” However, the sun also gives off UVA rays. These penetrate the skin, too. To fully protect your skin from the aging effects of the sun, look for a broad-spectrum sun block. Choose a product with at least SPF 15 that contains either mexoryl, oxybenzone or avobenzone for UVA protection.

Myth: My moisturizing bar soap will keep my skin healthy.

Truth: While a bar of soap and water may remove dirt from your face, it can also remove essential oils. Frequent washing with water and soap can damage skin rather than nourish it. As you scrub, you may be dehydrating your skin. Bars of soap are held together with binding agents that have a higher pH than products designed specifically for facial cleansing. These will dry out your skin. To keep skin youthful, it’s important to use facial products that keep moisture in, to help your skin maintain hydration and elasticity.
